The Fitzroy Crossing Renal Hostel provides a home for people with end-stage Kidney disease who require regular access to Dialysis services at the local Hospital. The residents come from the communities of the Fitzroy Valley and the Great Sandy Desert beyond- and come from 5 Aboriginal Language groups.
6 small houses provide 19 Beds in duplex or triplex format. An amenity building provides a dining rooms and kitchen, laundry, staff accommodation, and activity spaces. Cultural practices and backgrounds are accounted for in the design. People can choose to sleep inside the units or on the insect proof veranda “sleepout”.
The buildings and landscape have been designed to reflect the colours and species of plants from the homelands of the 5 language groups- creating a strong dialogue with the surrounding wooded grasslands which change colour from buff to emerald green as the annual cycle of the wet and dry seasons continue.
