building for diversity northbridge

Our proposal is conceived as a single development that enhances the local urban fabric of Newcastle Street while referencing the altered nature of this part of Northbridge.

The form of the development is driven externally by the old 13-15m rhythm of the now largely demolished original buildings, and internally by the creation of two major private circulation and garden spaces that run parallel with the Northbridge tunnel and in their own way echo this hidden urban intervention.

A ribbon-like screen made from steel, polycarbonate and chain mesh wraps the street-side block and the Hostel Block and unites the accommodation in an unusual manner.  This screen acts as an armature on which native vines and plants can grow, it blocks the sun in summer, articulates the building at the street and prevents overlooking of the street units from the Hostel units.
